How to Create an Inkjet Transfer

Image transfer is a highly popular technique artists use in collages, altered art, art journals, card making, art quilts, etc. It is very easy to create an inkjet transfer. There are currently at least two forms of transfer paper on the market. The kinds most commonly available to consumers are sheets of heat activated adhesive on a paper substrate. These have the advantage of low activation temperatures and the ability to adhere to a wide variety of materials including 100% cotton. The inks remain in the adhesive. This type of transfer is delicate, since the ink laden adhesive only rests on the surface of the fabric and can wear off with normal wear and washing. Extra care must also be taken when drying, since most home dryers can reach temperatures high enough to melt the adhesive.

Instructions for creating an inkjet transfer:

1: Pick the right image for creating your transfer. Make sure that the image is a clear one and will be able to be seen easily when transferred.

2: Use an inkjet printer to create your iron-on image.

3. Preview the image before you begin printing your transfer. Check for any mistakes or flaws.

4. Place a few sheets of plain paper into the inkjet printer. This will help you view the image before using the iron-on transfer paper.

5. Insert the iron-on transfer paper into your inkjet printer. Print two iron-on transfer images onto the special paper. One can be used for testing and the other can be used on the final product.

6. Cut out the iron-on transfer by following along the lines of the image. After this is done, you will need to set your iron to the highest setting-usually “cotton.” Turn off the steam setting.

7. Place the transfer onto your intended product.
